Frequently Asked Questions

Glad you asked! Our goal is to design robots for various purposes – to solve certain real-world issues, compete in robot competitions, and more! As an academic club, we strive to help bolster members’ engineering skills by providing an outlet through which their abilities and knowledge can be applied. In addition to building robots as a team, we hold mentorships, where students can work one-on-one with team leads to complete personal projects. The team also hosts social and professional events designed to gather students together and prepare them for future internship/career opportunities!

Any and all Stony Brook students, regardless of their major, year and/or experience level can join the robotics team.

You can contribute as much (or as little) as you wish – you aren’t obligated to do any level of work! Additionally, the work you put in can be in different forms, whether it’s working on the team’s current main project, assisting at events, etc.

The robotics team is composed of three main engineering groups: mechanical, electrical, and software. The mechanical team is often responsible for the structural design of the robots (i.e. CAD work, assembly). The electrical team works to find efficient power solutions for the robots (i.e. circuitry). The software team handles the controls of the robot by creating/implementing code. You can join any of these groups, and even be involved in more than one!

The Lab is located in the Basement of the Heavy engineering Building.

Robotics is a multidisciplinary field that requires collaboration between people with diverse skills, from mechanical fabrication to computer vision. Regardless of what you are passionate about and what you want to achieve, there will be ample opportunity to take on interesting challenges and learn something new.

Joining our Business Endeavors team will help you gain marketing and event management skills.

Absolutely! We are dedicated to providing our members with skills and experience necessary to succeed.

Our mentorship program, workshops, and annual Internal Competition will help you get started by teaching you the fundamentals of robotics, engineering, and more!

No problem! We are always looking for passionate and dedicated students to join us. You can generally join us and get involved during any semester.

We will also be hosting a series of introductory robotics workshops throughout the year. This may be a good opportunity to learn more and see if robotics is the field for you.

While we do not have any time commitment requirements, we encourage all of our members to dedicate as much as they feel is necessary to accomplish their tasks.

All of our projects happen because our dedicated members are excited and passionate about the work that they do. We hope that you too will feel the same about the projects that you participate in.

Certainly! While we do encourage our members to take their workload into account before making a commitment, you have the freedom to be part of as many engineering teams and projects as you wish, if you feel you are capable of making the necessary time commitment.
